Once again, welcome. Together, let us Educate, Liberate, Sustain, and Outshine, as we continue to shape the future of extracorporeal life support in our region and beyond.

Warm regards,

Huda Alfoudri
President, SWAAC ELSO

Organising Secretary , SWAAC ELSO 2026

It is with immense pleasure, pride and heartfelt enthusiasm that We welcome you all to the 12th Annual South West Asia and Africa Chapter (SWAAC) ELSO Conference, held in conjunction with the 15th Annual National ECMO Conference of the ECMO Society of India, in the vibrant city of Chennai, India from February 5th to 8th, 2026, a landmark gathering of the brightest minds, dedicated clinicians, and passionate innovators in the field of Extracorporeal Life Support.

This milestone event represents more than a gathering of minds—it is a global convergence of purpose. Here, science, skill, and the spirit of humanity unite, as we reaffirm our collective mission: to advance extracorporeal life support (ECMO) and save lives across all age groups, in every corner of the world.

Over the past decade, the role of ECMO has undergone significant evolution. What was once considered a last resort therapy has now become a cornerstone in the management of severe cardiac and respiratory failure. From the frontlines of global pandemics to the daily challenges faced in ICUs across regions, we have witnessed ECMO not only saving lives but also transforming outcomes.

At the heart of our shared journey is ELSO – the Extracorporeal Life Support Organisation — a beacon of clinical excellence and global collaboration. ELSO has transformed the ECMO landscape by democratizing access to knowledge, setting international benchmarks, fostering innovation, and nurturing a global community that supports one another in saving lives through ECMO. Across continents, cultures, and challenges, ELSO’s vision has remained constant: to educate, elevate, and empower. Its impact is felt in the protocols we follow, the standards we uphold, and the lives we save—neonatal, pediatric, and adult—every single day.

This legacy inspires the spirit of SWAAC ELSO 2026. Our conference motto is also ELSO — Educate, Liberate, Sustain, Outshine — reflects our commitment to not only spreading knowledge but also to unlocking potential, maintaining excellence, and surpassing barriers through collective wisdom, courage, and compassion.

Here in India, we take pride in echoing that vision. The ECMO Society of India has been at the forefront of ECMO education and capacity building for over a decade. Our robust Fellowship Program, now ELSO-certified, has trained and graduated numerous ECMO specialists—a milestone we celebrate with immense pride. These fellows serve as vital pillars of ECMO care across India and beyond, enhancing programs, supporting ICUs, mentoring colleagues, and driving innovation, often in settings that are remote from ideal.

We recognize that many countries, particularly in resource-limited regions, face formidable challenges: limited awareness of ECMO, a shortage of trained personnel, inaccessibility to appropriately sized equipment, and inconsistent infrastructure and support systems. We celebrate the resilience and resourcefulness of ECMO centers across our chapter, many of which have made remarkable strides despite limited infrastructure. Together, we will explore ways to scale capacity, share best practices, and build a robust network of excellence in extracorporeal care.

But we also know this: Together, we can rise above these obstacles. Through collaboration, mentorship, training, and support, we can empower one another, grow stronger, and ensure that no patient is left behind, regardless of their location. Let us remember: “Knowledge shared only multiplies.” This conference is our opportunity to do just that. As we gather in 2026, we carry forward the shared vision of advancing ECMO access, safety, and success worldwide.

A warm welcome to Chennai – the soul of South India. Chennai, a city rich in tradition and fueled by innovation, offers a unique cultural and academic experience. As the Healthcare Capital of India, it is home to world-renowned hospitals, brilliant minds, and a hospitable spirit that reflects the warmth of our country. From the ancient wisdom of its temples to the cutting-edge spirit of its ICUs, Chennai offers the perfect backdrop for reflection, connection, and innovation.

Whether you are a veteran in ECMO or a first-time attendee, this conference promises not only learning but also a powerful sense of community, purpose, and inspiration. We invite you to Chennai in 2026—to learn, to lead, and to light the way forward together. This year, our scientific program reflects cutting-edge developments—from mobile ECMO and advanced simulation to pediatric applications and training frameworks that empower teams in resource-limited settings.

This year’s conference promises an immersive experience featuring inspiring keynotes from international ECMO pioneers, hands-on workshops, expert panels, live demonstrations, and diverse tracks addressing adult, pediatric, and neonatal ECMO. It features dedicated sessions for nurses, perfusionists, and ECMO coordinators, a strong emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration and contextual innovation, and a showcase of "jugaad"—India’s ingenious approach to problem-solving with limited resources. More than a scientific exchange, this event is a platform for building

On behalf of the organizing committee and our local partners, We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all speakers, delegates, sponsors, and industry collaborators. Your participation enriches this event and inspires the future of ECMO across South West Asia and Africa. Let us come together in Chennai—to learn, lead, and light the way for those whose lives depend on our collective skill, science, and compassion.

We extend our deepest thanks to our esteemed international faculty, whose dedication and expertise continue to enhance ECMO practice across borders. A heartfelt note of appreciation also goes to the ELSO and SWAAC ELSO leadership for their unwavering support, vision, and encouragement in making this event a global celebration of ECMO excellence.
